Chapter Four
Kyle waited for me outside his small but adorable home. The small frame house was white and had a wrap-around porch with two rocking chairs and a small round bistro table right by the front door. It was chilly out and had been for weeks now as fall slowly turned the reins over to winter. I tugged my jacket collar up and adjusted the wool scarf around my neck as I took the few steps up to greet him.
My breath caught as his green eyes caught mine. Heâd changed into jeans and work boots and one of those mountain man jackets that are weird yellow and everyone loved. He wore a brown scarf tucked into that but no hat or gloves.
âKate,â he greeted me. âItâs nice to see you again.â
It had only been a few hours. I nodded. âI have about an hour before I need to get home.â The truth was since Ryan canceled our date, I had all the time in the world. I just didnât want it to seem like I didnât keep a busy schedule. At least during my after hours.
âWould you like some hot chocolate?â Kyle held the door open for me and I walked inside, pleasantly surprised at how neat and well kept the interior was. Heâd painted the living room a deep chocolate brown. The ivory furniture looked comfortable and lived in. There was a scarred coffee table in front of the largest couch, scattered with copies of Architectural Digest and USA Today.
âIâd love some.â Soâ¦educated and curious about current events, maybe? Or, the pessimistic side of me poked its head out and wondered if heâd placed them there for my benefit to make him seem that way. I shushed that voice in my head and stepped further into the living room. An icy chill swept across my skin and I turned to see a woman standing in the hallway. She had the same dark hair and green eyes that Kyle did except there was a shimmer around here that told me she was no longer living.
I wasnât ready to speak to her yet, so I turned to Kyle and gave him a slight nod. His eyes squeezed shut briefly and grief flashed over his face. He shut the door and headed to the kitchen. âYou can follow me.â
I took in everything as we walked right past his sister and into a surprisingly modern kitchen. His stove was to die for. Six burners, double oven, all chrome. I almost swooned at the sight of it. A large mixer sat next to the stove along with an espresso machine and a stack of haphazard cookbooks.
âYouâre a cook?â I asked as I perched on a stool and leaned on the small bar above the sink.
âSometimes. I travel too much and donât stay long enough to do anything more than dabble.â
I thought heâd open a packet of cocoa mix and dump it into a mug, but Kyle surprised me by measuring out pure cocoa powder, dropping it into the pan and adding just a little water into it to make a paste.
